ALTUS LSA, a European developer of turnkey unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for mission-critical defense and civilian applications, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Naval Group to integrate the ATLAS 8 Heavy Lift UAS onto naval vessels.
Naval Group is a global leader in high-seas vessel manufacturing, supplying resilient and versatile platforms to navies around the world. Through this collaboration, the two companies will adapt the ATLAS 8 octocopter UAS for operations aboard frigates, enabling a wide range of maritime missions. The announcement marks a strategic move to expand the role of UAS in naval logistics, intelligence gathering, and armed operations.
ATLAS 8E Heavy-Lift UAS
The ATLAS 8E is an electric octocopter UAS purpose-built for transporting critical cargo. It features a maximum payload capacity of 60 kg, making it suitable for a wide array of mission profiles. Designed with modularity in mind, the system supports both civilian and military applications. The ATLAS 8 Hybrid version is also in development which will be able to carry 100kg.
The aircraft’s versatile payload bay can accommodate:
- Medical supplies
- Spare parts and industrial tools
- Modular weapon systems (for military variants)
The marinization process for ATLAS 8 will involve adapting the system to the structural and electronic environment of naval vessels, ensuring compatibility with existing platforms and command systems.

The integration effort will focus on three operational variants of the ATLAS 8. The Heavy Lifter version is intended for ship-to-shore and intra-fleet logistics missions, enabling efficient transport of supplies and equipment across maritime platforms. The ISR variant will be configured for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations in naval environments. The Armored variant is being developed in collaboration with MBDA France.
This joint initiative will take into account naval-specific operational requirements, ensuring the system can operate reliably in maritime conditions.
ALTUS LSA brings extensive experience in developing modular and ruggedized UAS platforms for challenging environments, while NAVAL Group’s proven track record in naval system integration provides a strong foundation for this collaboration.
